Product configuration and CPQ: rules, compatibility and pricing

When a product catalogue becomes complex, rules need to be explicit, versioned and testable.

Reviewed on 2026-11-08

Valid configurations

A configurator may enforce required options, mutual exclusions, dependencies, bundles and technical compatibility. Good testing includes rejected as well as accepted combinations.

Pricing engine

Prices can vary by region, currency, quantity, term, contract, segment, discounts and effective dates. Rule precedence, exceptions and permissions must be explicit.

Quotes and approvals

Quotes are versioned and traceable: expiry, descriptions, terms, taxes, approval and transition to order. Exceptional discounts may require approval.

Data and rollout

Strong CPQ depends on controlled product master data, representative UAT and staged rollout across entities or countries without disrupting open quotes.
