Firewalls, VLANs and Wi-Fi: security without disruption

Internet connectivity alone does not guarantee a stable, well-controlled business network.

Reviewed on 2026-11-08

Equipment roles

Switches connect local devices; firewalls filter traffic between zones and to the internet; wireless access points provide radio access.

Segmentation and access control

VLANs logically separate groups such as staff, guests, tills and peripherals. Actual security depends on inter-VLAN rules, authentication and configuration.

Radio quality and roaming

Wi-Fi issues may involve coverage, interference, capacity, clients or roaming. Meaningful diagnosis often requires onsite observations, not only speed tests.

Make changes without stopping the business

Back up configurations, identify critical flows, schedule maintenance and keep a rollback route. Payment devices and business applications must be accounted for.

At a glance

ComponentKey questionTypical check
FirewallWhich flows are allowed?Rules, logging, VPN

Wi-FiIs wireless access usable and protected?Coverage, channels, authentication

How SFERE can support

Map, diagnose and recommend proportionate changes; disruptive work requires authorization and a rollback plan.
